United States v. Windsor, officially known as United States v. Windsor, Executor of the Estate of Spyer, et al., was a Supreme Court case that saw the court rule Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred federal recognition of same-sex marriages, unconstitutional. The case was argued on March 27, 2013 and decided on June 26, 2013. In a 5–4 decision, the court held that Section 3 violated the Fifteenth Amendment's Due Process Clause. Justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan were in favor while Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Chief Justice John Roberts dissented.[1]
