Robert Douglas Cook was the first openly gay person to run for political office in Canada.

A candidate in West Vancouver-Howe Sound in the 1979 provincial election in British Columbia, Cook ran as the sole candidate of the Gay Alliance Toward Equality, or GATE. He garnered just 126 votes, against 16,566 for the Social Credit Party's winning candidate Louis Allan Williams.
