Herbert Stein, the economic adviser to Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, recently noted that the modern Republican Party has been built on two planks: Opposition to taxes and anti-communism. The former remains, both resplendent and resurgent, but the latter has been replaced by something else: Gay bashing. ... Where is the Republican who will look certain conservative Christians in the eye and call them the bigots they are? Where are the Christian clergyman, like those of the civil rights era, who will condemn ignorance and bigotry, and exalt tolerance and understanding? Who in the GOP field will assert that homophobia is not a family value? The answer, it appears, is no one.
