In January 2009, following the January 2009 Bolivian constitutional referendum, a new constitution took effect in Bolivia. It prohibits discrimination based on sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
President Evo Morales claimed at an April 2010 environmental conference that the consumption of chicken "causes baldness and homosexuality." His comments reportedly left thousands in the crowd hollering with laughter.
